How to Deal with Periodontal Disease and How to Prevent it

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums that is caused by a build-up of dental plaque It is an infection that affects the tissues and bones that support your teeth. Precious Smiles Family Dentistry deals with this type of disease every day, so we are familiar with the most beneficial treatments. Symptoms of periodontal disease are swollen or bleeding gums. When your gums are red and swollen, they can start to pull away from your teeth. Spaces called pockets start forming. These pockets collect more bacteria that can result in bone and eventually tooth loss. Precious Smiles Family Dentistry educates every patient about the dangers of periodontal disease and how best to prevent it. If you do have periodontal disease, we offer a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. During this visit, plaque and tartar will be removed from the bottom of each pocket. We will also clean and smooth the tooth's root surfaces. Generally numbing is required to ensure patient comfort.
